Sung following the first shofar sounding on Rosh Hashanah, the opening line from liturgy asserts that everything and everyone is both reborn and called to judgement on this day. The song lyrics meditate on this concept, playing with the similar sounds of "mitchadesh" (renews itself) and "mekudash" (is made holy), to suggest that there is holiness in the act of renewal. It is at the core of our living nature to try again, to re-build, to renew ourselves; this makes us holy and deserving of compassion, especially on this day of judgement -- as deserving as if we were newly born.
lyrics
Hayom harat olam, hayom ya'amid bamishpat kol y'tzurei olamim.
(Today the world is reborn. Today the creations of all worlds are called to judgement.)
Hayom ha'olam mitchadesh
Hayom ha'olam mitchadesh
Hayom ha'olam hayom ha'olam
Hayom ha'olam mekudash
Today the whole world is renewed
Today the whole world is renewed
Today the whole world, today the whole world
is new, is sanctified!
