A'hallela Adonai b'hayai azam'ra l'elohai b'odi. Al tivtihu vin'divim b'ven adam she'ein lo tishuah. Teitzei ruho yashuv l'admato, bayom hahu av'du eshtonotav. Ashrei she'eil Ya'akov b'ezro, sivro al Adonai elohav. I will praise Adonai all my life, make music to my God while I still exist. Don't put your trust in princes, in humans who cannot save. Their breath departs; they return to the dust; on that day their plans come to nothing. Happy is the one who has the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in Adonai their God.

God is my light, my movement toward refuge. Whom shall I fear? God is the strength of my existence. Whom shall I dread? (verse 1) One thing I ask from God -- One thing shall I always plead: To dwell in the House of God; To see with the Sweetness of God; To search out the Palace of God; all the days of my life... (verse 4)

Od yenuvun b'seivah deshinim vera'ananim yehiyu They (righteousness) will continue to bring forth fruit as they age; they will be full of sap and aliveness Like the fruit of the vine, ripening in its time like the fruit of the vine, bringing sweetness of the divine Psalm 92:15, additional English text by Noah Weinberg and Molly Bajgot

Don't let me get lost in my soul-suffering I will trust in the wholeness of everything My heart says, "I am looking for you!" I will trust in the truth of the way things are. Fill your heart with power and courage Teach me the way of Presence Psalm 27
9.
When your eyes are aching and your head is foggy, forgive yourself. When the dishes pile up and the blocks are on the floor, and you know that you should clean them but you lie on the couch, forgive yourself. When the day is over and you need another day before tomorrow comes, forgive yourself. When your little one clings and cuddles like you might leave again soon, forgive yourself. Because it’s not up to you to finish the work – It’s not on your shoulders to get it all done, So at some point you’ll just have to throw in the towel, and Forgive yourself. When you dream of moving to Fiji or Canada, check yourself. When you see the news and you shut yourself down as the headlines scroll by, check yourself. When you think of a thousand excuses why you can’t, won’t, shouldn’t, just check yourself. When you’re tempted to leave it to fate or to faith, check yourself. Because you’re not free to desist from the work – You are bound up with others you don’t even know, And choosing silence enables evil, so Check yourself. But if you falter and fall short of where you thought you’d be, forgive yourself. And if you need some distraction from stupid TV, forgive yourself. If your inbox is bursting and you just can’t keep up, forgive yourself. And if you don’t have it in you to save the day today, take off your superwoman cape and forgive yourself. Because it’s not up to you to finish the work – It’s not on your shoulders to get it all done, So at some point you’ll just have to pass the baton and Forgive yourself. But if you’re thinking of taking a four-year sabbatical, check yourself. And if your heart is hardening to anyone not like you, check yourself. If you’re only looking out for number one, just check yourself. And if you’re treating people like a means to an end, check yourself. Because you’re not free to desist from the work – You are bound up with others you don’t even know, So don’t lose sight of the reason for the fight, and Check yourself. It’s not up to you to finish the work, But you’re not free to cast it aside – And neither am I, so please remind me when I forget That it’s not up to me, And it’s not up to you, But it sure as hell is on us. -- Adapted from Pirkei Avot 2:21: Lo alecha ham'lacha ligmor, v'lo ata ben chorin l'hibatil mimena.

Oh, the world is changing And I am changing with it Oh, the world is changing And I am changing too

about

Elul is a month of contemplation. Jews spend this moon in anticipation for the Days of Awe, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, reflecting on the state of our souls and preparing to stand before the Source of All Life.

This album started as a seed in a campground in Western Massachusetts with the playing of an original song setting of text from Psalm 27, the psalm traditionally recited daily during the month of Elul.

Three years later, we are happy to present this collection of original songs in the themes of Elul written by Jewish artists. We hope they inspire reflection, feeling, and the strength to change and grow. They are songs to listen to in your car and to sing in the living room with your friends and to lie on the grass with them playing in your head. We hope the sparks of change brought by this music contribute to the healing of the world.

Love,
Anat and Matt, co-producers
